Tifa's mother had passed in 1994 when she was only 8 years of age, leaving the young Tifa confused. Soon after, Tifa headed to Mr. Nibel, believing that if she crossed the mountain she would see her mother again. Cloud followed to keep her safe, but both fell from the bridge, leaving Tifa badly injured. 5 years later in 1999, Cloud called Tifa to the water tower to tell her about his wanting to join SOLDIER. At that time, she made him promise to protect her if she ever got into trouble. He agreed, then left the following spring. Tifa was so worried about him, she constantly asked the Shinra members that came through if they knew of Cloud and read through the newspapers everyday, hoping for some mention of him. She never did find anything about him.
Two years later at the age of 15, Tifa was working as a tour guide through the Nibelheim Mountains. Additionally she had been taking martial art lessons from Zangan. On September 21st of 0001, she was hired to lead Shinra personnel up to investigate the Mako reactor at Mt. Nibel. In this group were Sephiroth and Zack Fair. When they arrive, she is not permitted within the reactor and ends up having to help the guard that blocked her entry back down the path to Nibelhiem.
On October 1st, Sephiroth sets the town on fire. Tifa's father and other townspeople followed him to the reactor but were all slain. Tifa finds her father's body at the reactor with Sephiroth's Masamune. At that moment was the blooming of hatred for both Sephiroth and Shinra alike. She ran into the reactor intending on attacking Sephiroth, but failed. He disarmed her and injured her, sending her down the steps and into unconsciousness.
When she next woke, Zagan was with her, trying to heal her with Cure but only was just able to keep her alive. Time went by and Tifa recovered from her wounds several weeks later and Zagan left Midgar. She joins AVALANCHE soon after, an anti-Shinra group lead by Barret Wallace. Additionally she became the owner of the bar/restaurant named 7th Heaven which doubled as AVALANCHE's base in the secret basement. It was five years later in late 0006 that she met with Cloud once more.
She could tell that he had changed through the years. There was something odd about how he acted and she suggested to the then mercenary to join AVALANCHE. Two missions go by successfully, the second one separating Cloud from the rest of the group. As they returned to 7th Heaven, they discover someone spying on the group who then points out Don Corneo as an informant for Shinra. Tifa comes up with a plan be chosen as Don's "bride" of the day to get closer and get more information on him. It was as Don and she were alone that Cloud and a new woman named Aeris Gainsborough arrived. Don reveals that Shinra is going to drop Sector 7's plate to obliterate the slums. Barrett, Tifa, and Cloud hurry to protect the pillar. Despite their best efforts, the pillar fell and most of the members of AVALANCHE are killed. Aeris is captured as the remaining three escape.
The remaining members make an attempt to save Aeris but are captured instead. In the quiet of the night, the cells open mysteriously and the group runs around the building, battling several of Shinra's machines. They eventually escape to Kalm where Cloud recalls his version of how Sephiroth destroyed Nibelheim. Tifa listens and is confused by his version of the tale, however does not speak to him of anything because she is now doubting her memories. They all travel the world for some time searching for Sephiroth and eventually end up in Nibelheim where no body remembers Cloud or Tifa ever having lived there.
Advancing to the Whirlwind Maze, Sephiroth finally appeared and shows how the events at Nibelheim truly occurred. Tifa was worried about how the truth would affect Cloud's state of mind and begged for Sephiroth to stop, but it was too late. Cloud handed over the Black Materia capable of summoning Meteor to Sephiroth and apologized to Tifa. As the ground shakes, Barrett and Tifa escape on the Highwind but are captured once more and taken to Junon.
Tifa is thrown into a gas chamber and just as she breaks free from her restraints, Sapphire Weapon attacks Junon and blows a hole into the wall of the gas chamber saving Tifa. As Shinra forces approached, she ran up and onto the Mako cannon to escape but ended up in a confrontation with the woman executive named Scarlet. After a few moments, she runs and jumps off the cannon onto the Highwind and all safely escape from Shinra. For days, the party searches for Cloud and finds him in Mideel, suffering from a Mako overdose. Tifa stays by his side to monitor his condition for several days. With no improvement, things grew dire as Ultimate Weapon appeared and the Lifestream overtook Mideel, sending Tifa and Cloud into it as she tried to push the catatonic Cloud to safety.
Inside the Lifestream, Tifa was able to enter Cloud's subconscious and uncover the truth about Nibelheim. As she learns this, she helps Cloud to recover his memories and reaffirm his motivations. She also learned of how he admired her when they were children and how he left to join SOLDIER to impress her, then later helped her during the incident at Nibelheim even though she had no idea it was him. Memories restored, the two leave the Lifestream and are located by the others on the outskirts of Mideel.
Before the final fight with Sephiroth and in the aftermath of Midgar's siege, Cloud tells everyone to find a reason to fight. Tifa has no where to go, so she stays with Cloud and speaks with him atop the edge of the Northern Cave. It was late January 0007 when the final fight was fought, defeating Sephiroth and releasing the power of Holy that Aeris had cast when she was murdered.
There was peace after the final battle. Tifa, Cloud and Marlene (Barett's daughter) become a sort of a family in the new 7th Heaven that is situated now in the city of Edge. In addition to tending the bar, she took care of Marlene and handled the business portion of Cloud's newly running delivery service. Initially all was well but Tifa began to sense that all was not well with Cloud once more. He kept drawing away from everyone as time went by. One day he brought a young boy home named Denzel with Geostigma and he became a part of their family, but still Cloud drew further from them. Eventually, he left 7th Heaven with no explanation. Tifa called his cell phone several times, only to go to voice mail. All she could do was ask about his day and hope that he would call back.
In 0008, Tifa took Marlene to Aeris' church to look for Cloud and only discovers that Cloud himself has Geostigma. A man named Loz appeared to find Tifa there in the church. Immediately, they began to fight one another. Despite her best efforts, Tifa was defeated. She woke in Cloud's arms some time later, telling him that he was late and calling out for Marlene, only to fall unconscious again. The next time she wakens, it is nightfall and both she and Cloud are in 7th Heaven. Tifa asks Cloud to search for the missing children and at first, he turned her down. However, after a rousing pep talk from Tifa he departs to find the two young ones. The next day, Tifa runs off to the memorial in the center of Edge and tried to shake Denzel out of his catatonic state. He looked up at her and she was taken back by his eyes. They had looked like those of Sephiroth's. Bahamut SIN was summoned and knocked Tifa out only momentarily. Staggering upwards, she ensures that Denzel and Marlene are okay, then rides on the back of Cloud's motorcycle to join the fight with Cid, Yuffie, Red, Cait Sith, Barett and Vincent to defeat Bahamut SIN. Cloud chased the three men and the rest of the crew jumped on Cid's new airship Shera to observe the strenuous fight with Kadaj and Sephiroth.

Tifa had been in the middle of literally kicking a man out of the club for harassing the females when the woman had spotted her, noticing her strength and skills. It wasn't long before she was sought out and offered yet another job by Tori Jacobs. One that put her in another security position, but it wasn't just a run of the mill security job.
