Phase-space
In the year 2390 humans began pioneering the first Phase-space engine, the Hawking. Extensive testing around Earth's solar system allowed them to rapidly increase the power of the Hawking engine and in less than 50 years they could jump to distant star systems. How Phase-space engines work is simple when summarized: the ship moves forward phasing into a separate dimension layered just above the current dimension, said dimension is flexible and allows the engine to manipulate the space to a degree allowing it to travel from point A to B in a matter of days rather than years.
At the present time high end Phase-space engines can jump 5 light years in 4 days, low end engines can jump 5 light years in 7 days. For every 5 light years you wish to travel you must add three to six days to that time period to complete said jump. Likewise, high end engines can jump at a precise manner jumping with little effort and landing exactly on coordinate, low end phase engines may jump you at a much slower rate or may not have an accurate exit typically making those ships exit several kilometers away from their coordinates. The average phase engine can jump 5 light years in 5.5 days and has reliable accuracy with destination.
Ships can dock with others ships and enter Phase-space and combine their ships Phase engines increasing the time by a day or two. Phase jumping is typically hard on ship hulls and it is not recommended jumping smaller ships long distance without exiting and inspecting your ship hull for potential weak spots, larger ships are typically more durable. When entering Phase-space larger ships create gravity wells around them and that could cause smaller ships to fall into the gravity well and be forced into a Phase jump, they will enter as a ship and exit as debris.
